Joker Phillips, formerly the head football coach for the University of Kentucky, was on the hot seat this season. Then his squad got blown out by Vanderbilt this past weekend. Getting blown out by Vandy when you are on the hot seat lands you in the unemployment line and now Kentucky is looking for a new head coach.
Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports has named Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator as a one of the men on Kentucky's initial list. It makes sense. The Falcons are 8-0 and one reason is Koetter's improvement of the offense. Koetter also has a background in the college game as he has been a head coach for both Boise State and Arizona State. He also is an offensive guy and despite the SEC being a "defense first" league, low tier football schools like Kentucky seem to have more success when going with an offensive type mind at head coach.
Right now this is just in the development stage but it will be interesting to see how it plays out for the Falcons and if it becomes a distraction as the season progresses. Being 8-0 is great but it also means that teams will be coming for your coaches.
