Falcons Free Agent Decision: Chris Hope

The Falcons are facing a lot of decisions this off-season and that starts with their unrestricted free agents. We will go through them one by one and decide whether or not the Falcons should re-sign them. A lot of times it's not as easy as it looks as some decisions have more than just roster spot implications. We also have to think about the salary cap as it is expected to increase by around $1 million this season.

Chris Hope is an eleven year pro that has spent time with the Steelers and the Titans as well as this past season with the Falcons. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2008. In 2012, Hope played in all eighteen games for the Falcons, starting four. He finished with 18 total tackles, 8 assists and a fumble recovery and if my memory serves correct he played better as the season progressed and he got more comfortable with Mike Nolan's defense. Hope made $990K last season.

Hope's future is tied directly with another Falcons free agent, William Moore. In a perfect world, the Falcons would re-sign William Moore before he gets to free agency. If that happens then keeping Hope is much less of a priority. If Moore is allowed to test free agency, I think the Falcons should go ahead and secure Hope early on in the process. Having an experienced NFL safety that is familiar with your scheme can really help down the stretch.

Verdict: The plan seems to be to let William Moore test the free agent market. In that scenario, I believe we should re-sign Chris Hope.
